Within my classroom, my students will know that they are within a safe and welcoming place. They will not have to feel like the classroom is a place where they are scared and unable to be themselves. My students will flourish to the best of their abilities, and I will make sure that they are happy when they both enter and leave my classroom. In addition to that, I also believe in being an effective teacher, an idea that comes from Wong and Wong. My students will know that they will have choices within the classroom. One such example is that when we are creating our classroom norms, my students help me to write them out, and we all sign at the bottom. Finally, my classroom encourages team work and collaboration - this is achieved through aspects like group assignments, discussions, and reading groups, as well as through the use of flexible seating.
My classroom management philosophy is inspired a lot by Love and Logic. One of the biggest aspects of this is respect within the classroom. I respect my students so that way they will know how to treat me. I give the students time to do their own independent work, but I also make sure that the students to know not to cause distractions for other kids. I create a classroom environment where the students are the problem solvers - they are asked to try and solve the problem themselves first before I help out. This helps them to develop significantly in their problem solving skills, as well as their social-emotional skills. Finally, my classroom is designed to make sure that the students are engaged within the lessons. If a student is not engaged, they may not be actively learning - this can become a problem. In order to prevent this, my classroom presents students with multiple different ways to engage in the material.
